Introduction

Escort vehicles are one of the biggest costs and planning steps in an oversize move. Book too few and your New Mexico Oversize Permit can be voided at the first inspection. Book too many and you pay for pilot cars you didn't need.

New Mexico sets clear triggers for escorts based on a load's width, length, and height. This guide explains when you need one escort, when you need two, and when the state may require a police escort instead.

The Short Answer

Under New Mexico's rules:

  • Width: Escorts are required for all loads 14 feet wide or wider.

  • Length: Loads over 110 feet 1 inch need one escort up to and including 120 feet 1 inch. Loads over 120 feet 1 inch need two escorts.

  • Height: Loads over 16 feet high may need an escort or an extra person to check each overhead clearance.

  • Police escort: May be required for loads 20 feet wide or more.

Your New Mexico Oversize Permit will state the exact escort requirements for your move.

Where the Escort Rules Come From

New Mexico's oversize and overweight rules are in Title 18, Chapter 19, Part 8 of the New Mexico Administrative Code (18.19.8 NMAC). The escort sections run from 18.19.8.80 NMAC onward.

Under 18.19.8.80 NMAC, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) may require one or more escort vehicles or police escorts for a move. Under 18.19.8.85 NMAC, the permittee must furnish New Mexico-certified escort vehicles unless a police escort is required.

Escorts Based on Width

18.19.8.81 NMAC requires escort vehicles for all widths at or exceeding 14 feet.

Loads narrower than 14 feet may still need escorts on certain routes. NMDOT publishes an escort vehicle map that shows where narrower loads must be escorted, so always check your route against it before you move.

One Escort or Two Based on Length

18.19.8.82 NMAC sets the length triggers:

Overall Length Escorts Required
110 feet 1 inch or less None for length alone
Over 110 feet 1 inch, up to and including 120 feet 1 inch One escort
Over 120 feet 1 inch Two escorts

Length includes front and rear overhang, so measure the full loaded combination, not just the trailer.

Escorts for Tall Loads

Under 18.19.8.83 NMAC, NMDOT may require an escort vehicle or an additional person for loads over 16 feet high. Their job is to verify that the load clears each overhead obstruction, such as bridges, signs, and wires.

Tall loads also come with other duties. Loads 15 feet 6 inches or taller need a route survey, and loads over 18 feet need written certification from the utility company before crossing under overhead wires.

When a Police Escort Is Required

Under 18.19.8.84 NMAC, NMDOT may require a police escort for:

  • Structures or loads 20 feet wide or more,

  • Moves on certain roads,

  • Any move where NMDOT decides traffic or safety would be affected.

If the move is entirely within a city, a municipal police escort may be used.

What a New Mexico Escort Vehicle Must Have

Not every pickup truck can serve as an escort. Under 18.19.8.86 to 18.19.8.88 NMAC, an escort vehicle must:

  • Be certified by New Mexico. Certification lasts one year or until insurance expires, whichever comes first, and the vehicle is inspected annually.

  • Have a wheelbase of at least 100 inches.

  • Show the company name, city, and state on both sides.

  • Carry the same minimum insurance required for the permitted load.

  • Have two amber lights on top, visible at least 500 feet in normal sunlight.

  • Display a bright yellow "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign, 5 feet wide by 12 inches high, with black letters.

  • Keep two-way radio contact with the escorted vehicle at all times.

  • Carry a fire extinguisher, required safety equipment, flagging equipment, and the NMDOT escort vehicle map.

Under 18.19.8.20 NMAC, escort vehicles must be certified before entering New Mexico.

What Happens If a Required Escort Is Missing

Under 18.19.8.28 NMAC, a New Mexico Oversize Permit is void if a required escort is not present for the entire move. A void permit is treated as if no permit was issued at all, and fees are not refunded or credited.

The load must stop, and it cannot move again until a new permit is issued.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring only the trailer. Overall length includes overhang and can push you over 110 feet 1 inch.

  • Booking one escort for a 121-foot load. Anything over 120 feet 1 inch needs two.

  • Skipping the escort vehicle map. Some routes need escorts for loads under 14 feet wide.

  • Using an uncertified pilot car. Out-of-state escorts must be New Mexico certified before entry.

  • Letting the escort leave early. The escort must stay for the whole move.
