Commercial trucks operating in New Mexico must follow state size and weight regulations established by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). Vehicles or loads exceeding legal dimensions or weight limits must obtain an oversize or overweight permit before entering or traveling through the state.

Legal Size and Weight Limits in New Mexico

New Mexico requires permits when commercial vehicles exceed the following legal limits:

  • Width: 8 feet 6 inches (102 inches)
  • Height: 14 feet
  • Single Vehicle Length: 40 feet
  • Combination Length: 75 feet
  • Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): 80,000 pounds
  • Single Axle Weight: Approximately 20,000–21,000 pounds
  • Tandem Axle Weight: Approximately 34,000 pounds
