Important distinction from Oregon
Unlike Oregon:
- New Mexico does participate in IFTA
- That means fuel taxes are still reported through IFTA
So New Mexico does NOT replace IFTA the way Oregon does
What you are required to do
If you operate a qualified vehicle (typically 26,000+ lbs) and run interstate:
You must:
- File IFTA quarterly (including New Mexico fuel use)
- Pay New Mexico Weight Mile Tax separately
So yes — you may have to do BOTH
In New Mexico:
- IFTA = fuel tax
- WMT = road use tax based on weight/miles
They are two different taxes, not substitutes
Example
If you drive through:
- Texas → New Mexico → Arizona
You would:
- Report fuel purchases and miles for all states (including NM) under IFTA
- Also file and pay New Mexico Weight Mile Tax for miles driven in NM
When you might not need IFTA
You may not need IFTA if:
- You operate only within New Mexico (intrastate only)
- Your vehicle does not meet IFTA requirements
Simple way to remember
-
Oregon → WMT replaces fuel tax → limited IFTA role
- New Mexico → WMT + IFTA both apply
Do I need to report IFTA for New Mexico, if I report New Mexico Weight Mile Tax?
